Amanah members grow restless over Mahathir-Anwar struggle

Party insiders say Amanah leaders must make up their minds whether they support Mahathir or Anwar.

PETALING JAYA:
Influential members of Amanah are to have discussions with their leaders over a growing rift between those supporting Dr Mahathir Mohamad and others who back Anwar Ibrahim to be the next prime minister.

A party insider said a consensus is needed among the party leadership.

“The party is small and we need to start having plans for elections. If our leaders can come to a decision, we can start activating our machinery too,” he told FMT.

He said the grassroots at times are torn between their leaders who have different preferences for a national leader.

Yesterday, Meru assemblyman Mohd Fakhrulrazi Mohd Mokhtar created a stir in Selangor politics by leaving Amanah to join PKR.

Fakhrulrazi’s departure leaves the party with only six seats in the state legislative assembly, as opposed to the eight seats it had won in the last general election.

Another party insider said it was becoming apparent which MP is supporting Mahathir or Anwar, causing disruption within party members who are looking for a firm direction.

“They need to clear the air among themselves, ” the insider said.

FMT has reached out to Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and is awaiting for comments.

Amanah, comprising a splinter faction of PAS, contested 27 parliamentary seats in the 2018 general election and won 11. Five of its MPs were appointed ministers and the others became deputy ministers in Mahathir’s government.

Amanah leaders must make up their mind

Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani of Universiti Utara Malaysia said some of the Amanah leaders were with Ikram, an Islamic NGO, with some of them supporting Mahathir while others are with Abim, a youth-based organisation which supported Anwar.

Ikram stands for Pertubuhan Ikram Malaysia while Abim stands for Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia.

Azizuddin said due to that, the factions in Amanah may continue.

Furthermore, he said, Mahathir had given preference to Amanah as he accepted their Islamic version of Mercy to all Creations. “That is why some still support Mahathir. They managed to influence him,” he said.

He said Anwar is also trying to woo as many Amanah MPs to his side as possible as he eyes the prime minister’s post.

“It now boils down to what Amanah leaders want as a team so that they can move forward,” he added.
