A recent blogpost claimed that members of Zeti’s family had received over RM100 million from fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, which included 1MDB funds.
Patriot president Mohamed Arshad Raji said regardless of whether Malaysia Today, the blog which made the claim, was reliable, “in view of the possible ramifications sparked by the allegations, Zeti cannot remain silent. She must clear the air immediately”.
“These are very serious allegations and threaten the integrity of our central bank as well as our financial institutions,” he said in a statement today.
“Patriot has mentioned before and would like to repeat that we have zero tolerance for corruption in high offices. A person who is guilty of corruption, irrespective of how high a position one holds, must be seriously dealt with.”
Former prime minister Najib Razak previously alleged that Zeti suggested he open a personal account to receive foreign funds which were eventually linked to the 1MDB scandal.
On Tuesday, Najib recalled that Zeti released a statement after the 14th general election to declare she was unaware of the existence of funds or transactions in his BNM account.
However, Arshad said: “It is impossible for Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) not to be aware of such humongous sums of money going into a personal account.
“Even if the funds were from personal donations, due diligence should have been carried out irrespective (of whether) a minister had said then he had met the donor (or donors) of the fund.
“Bank Negara makes autonomous decisions. Officials in Bank Negara do not answer to politicians of the ruling parties.
“A thorough investigation must be carried out and no stone must be left unturned. Patriot and the public are keen to know the outcome of the investigation.”
Arshad’s call comes a day after Umno Youth lodged a police report against Zeti and her family over their alleged involvement in the 1MDB scandal.
Executive committee member Shahrul Nasrun Kamaruddin said the police report would enable authorities to open investigations and provide a detailed report on the allegations.
He hoped police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission would prioritise the issue.
