All-party conference imperative to check Covid-19, says Kit Siang

The DAP veteran says a new national consensus is sorely needed to handle the worsening pandemic.

If a rate of 4,000+ daily infections prevails, the total number of Covid-19 cases is set to break the 200,000 mark by the end of the month.
PETALING JAYA:
The DAP has called for a special national conference to map out a new strategy and approach under the auspices of Parliament in the nation’s war against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Calling for an end to the “cloak-and-dagger” politics, the party has proposed for a meeting of all political parties to reach a new national consensus that the country’s biggest threat is the Covid-19 pandemic.

DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang said the emergency imposed last Tuesday is no bar for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to convene a special sitting of the Dewan Rakyat immediately to authorise the convening of the conference.

“Malaysia needs an all-of-government and whole-of-society approach to handle this national crisis. This has become imperative following the new grim record where the number of daily cases crossed the 4,000-mark yesterday,” he said in a statement today.

The Iskandar Puteri MP said at the current rate, the total number of infections is set to break the 200,000 mark by the end of the month.

“If we average 4,000 daily increase of Covid-19 infections, we will burst into the bracket of the top 58 countries in the world by the end of the movement control order (MCO) on Jan 26.”

Lim said when the first MCO was imposed on March 18 last year, there were 790 cases and two deaths.

“Therefore, today’s figures show that the national strategy in the Covid-19 pandemic used so far has failed and must be reviewed and overhauled.

“Without malice or finger-pointing, let us own up to the fact that despite calls for new strategies and approaches to fight the pandemic, these calls have fallen on deaf ears,” he added.
