Umno out of govt in August, suggests Tok Mat

Party deputy president Mohamad Hasan says members should "stop playing silat here and silat there".

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan has told Umno members to stop any games and be ready to leave the government in August.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Umno should withdraw from the government in August if the party decides to break with Perikatan Nasional, deputy president Mohamad Hasan has suggested to the party’s general assembly.

“If we have agreed to withdraw in August, then let’s withdraw in August. Let’s not play silat pulut (silat performance at a wedding ceremony).”

Umno members should stop playing “silat here and silat there”. “How would we head anywhere?”

He said that if a decision on a break is made, “in August we leave en masse”. He told Umno members that their aim is to take over Putrajaya and they need to be strong and united to face the general election.

(Aug 1 is the expiry date of the current state of emergency. The Perikatan Nasional government has stated that a general election would be called after the emergency is lifted.)

Mohamad said Umno is a big party and should be able to make an impact in politics. “Once we have taken a step towards that direction, we should not backtrack.”

He also asked Umno members to be strong and said their actions must benefit the party.

“When we do business, we should not lose. The bottom line is for Umno to win,” he added.

Mohamad who is commonly known as Tok Mat said Umno members should not compromise in any situation as Umno is the biggest political organisation.

“If anyone wants to talk to us, we must be the main party. That is the condition,” he told hundreds of Umno delegates.

He also said the party is open to discuss with any party that is friendly to Malays and Islam. “We are open to discuss with them.”
