Zahid-Anwar chat part of new political alignment, says PAS

Party president Abdul Hadi Awang says he wants nothing to do with the new alliance.

Abdul Hadi Awang also says PAS will not interfere in the internal affairs of another party.
PETALING JAYA:
PAS is claiming that the alleged conversation between Umno and PKR presidents Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Anwar Ibrahim is part of a new political alignment.

The Islamist party’s president, Abdul Hadi Awang said it was an alliance they wanted nothing to do with.

“It (the conversation) is part of the new alignment that was announced. It (the conversation) is an indication,” he told reporters in Terengganu.

Hadi said PAS would not cooperate with Umno if the latter wanted to form a new alliance with Pakatan Harapan which comprises PKR, DAP and Amanah.

This was because PAS had agreed to be a part of Muafakat Nasional which involved both Umno and PPBM.

Hadi went on to say that while the authenticity of the recording could not be confirmed, it was more important to keep in mind PH’s record of broken promises.

This included the opposition coalition’s promise to reduce petrol prices.

An audio recording of a purported phone call between Zahid and Anwar surfaced soon after the Umno annual general assembly last month.

Zahid has since denied that it was him in the audio, saying he had not communicated with Anwar and that the fake recording was a malicious political ploy to bring down his party.

Anwar has also denied it, saying there were people with voices sounding like his.

Hadi also said PAS would not interfere in the internal affairs of another party when asked to comment on calls for Zahid to resign following the audio recording.
