Health ministry to propose no interstate travel for Hari Raya

The minister says the restrictions will have to continue because of the increased number of infections.

Health minister Dr Adham Baba says there have been requests from various parties to extend the interstate travel curbs.
PETALING JAYA:
The ban on interstate travel, including during the Hari Raya celebrations, needs to be extended owing to the Covid-19 situation, the health ministry said today.

According to a Bernama report, health minister Dr Adham Baba said the ministry will propose that the lifting of interstate travel restrictions be postponed.

He said the government has received requests from various parties to delay the lifting of the restrictions.

“As cases are increasing daily and (the situation) is still unstable, travel (restrictions) must be extended,” he said after an event in Putrajaya.

Adham also said Ramadan bazaars will be closed if they lead to new Covid-19 clusters.

Pictures of several Ramadan bazaars had gone viral, showing crowds flocking to stalls with physical distancing barely observed.

To address this, the government has empowered city mayors, local council heads and enforcement officers of Grade-19 and above to fine those who violate the standard operating procedures.

Previously, health experts had urged Putrajaya to keep the ban on interstate travel during the Hari Raya festive period. They said the restrictions should remain until Covid-19 cases drop to double digits.

However, some business groups have also pleaded for Putrajaya to lift the ban as more businesses in the tourism industry are facing closures.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Medical Association also warned that infections are expected to rise with people visiting Ramadan bazaars over the next 30 days.
