Localities in Terengganu, Sarawak to go under EMCO

Police also arrested 514 people yesterday over MCO-related offences.

A sub-district in Terengganu and a longhouse and school in Sarawak will be placed under enhanced movement control order (EMCO) from May 20 to June 2 after a rise in Covid-19 cases in the areas.

In a statement today, senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that the Pelagat sub-district of Besut, Terengganu, will be placed under EMCO after the health ministry reported that 199 of the 1,092 Covid-19 tests taken from residents in the area returned positive.

The EMCO will involve 12 villages and two low-cost public housing projects.

Meanwhile in Sarawak, the Wun Ak Ering longhouse and SK Bakerkong in Tanjung Manis, Mukah, will be placed under EMCO after the health ministry reported five positive cases.

Ismail also said police arrested 514 people yesterday over MCO-related offences.

Of that number, 503 were slapped with compound fines while 11 were remanded.

Among the offences were failing to wear face mask (147), failing to provide materials for contact tracing or registration (127) and crossing districts or states without permission (62).

Meanwhile, a total of 4,216 compliance task force teams were deployed to conduct checks on 27,181 supermarkets, restaurants, hawker stalls, factories, banks, among other places.

Ismail also said police arrested 41 illegal immigrants and seized two boats under the ongoing Op Benteng.
