PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had given three reminders to the Perikatan Nasional-led government to reconvene Parliament as soon as possible.
The first was on June 16, followed by another on June 29, in which Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah reiterated his stand that Parliament needs to sit as soon as possible.
Three days ago, the King gave a third reminder that Parliament should reconvene before Aug 1, according to Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun and Dewan Negara president Rais Yatim, who had been granted an audience by the King.
“This is historic as the King reiterated his stand three times that Parliament can and should sit,” the PH component party leaders said in a joint statement today.
“But we regret to (note that) till today, the prime minister and de facto law minister have not released any statement on the matter.”
They said this could trigger a constitutional crisis if Muhyiddin and his Cabinet “stubbornly disobey the King”.
It is thus necessary, they said, that Parliament should sit before Aug 1 to debate the Covid-19 crisis, the emergency ordinances and the national recovery plan.
“Parliament needs to sit to debate and solve economic and social issues faced by the rakyat.
“The rakyat are now so depressed with some of them committing suicide while others have put up white flags, ” they said, adding that the Parliament sitting “is about the people and not for political reasons”.
If Muhyiddin fails to announce the date to reconvene Parliament, they said, MPs from both sides of the divide will be asked to “uphold parliamentary democracy and the King’s decree and march together to Parliament on July 19”.
