Responding to Attorney-General Idrus Harun’s statement earlier, the PH presidential council said Muhyiddin was appointed last year based on the support of the political party leaders backing him.
“Hence, when the leader of the major party (backing him) announces withdrawal of support, then the prime minister would have lost the party’s backing and the majority support of MPs.
“Clearly the attorney-general is acting more like a Perikatan Nasional politician instead of defending the supremacy of the law,” the council said in a statement today.
Earlier today, Idrus said Muhyiddin remained the prime minister until his parliamentary majority was tested in the Dewan Rakyat, adding that there was no substantial evidence that proved he had lost the majority support of MPs.
Citing Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution, Idrus said whether or not an individual held the majority support of MPs must be determined by the MPs themselves, not through statements from political parties or leaders.
Umno had announced that it was withdrawing its support for Muhyiddin as prime minister, with party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi calling for his resignation after a Supreme Council meeting that lasted over four hours.
The PH leaders said Muhyiddin should respectfully resign as he had lost his support and legitimacy as prime minister. They added, however, that now was not the time for a snap election.
They said PH will continue to focus on resolving issues faced by the people and come up with better measures to revive the economy.
“We must give more focus on efforts to save lives and the economy following the Covid-19 crisis which is worsening, rather than continuing to engage in politicking for posts and rewards.”
