Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said in a statement that he had presented to the King more statutory declarations from Umno MPs retracting their support for the government, although he did not state the number.
Prior to this, he said, Perikatan Nasional had 114 MPs who were backing the administration.
He added that he had on July 30 presented eight statutory declarations to the King, declaring they had retracted support for Muhyiddin on July 30.
“This is sufficient to show that Muhyiddin has lost the majority, even though the actual figure is more than that,” he said in a statement.
“The prime minister’s statement in his televised address that the government still has the majority is false.”
The former deputy prime minister also challenged the government to call a special Parliamentary sitting immediately to prove that Muhyiddin still had the majority, instead of waiting till September.
Earlier today, opposition MPs rubbished Muhyiddin’s claim, saying elected representatives from Pakatan Harapan, PSB’s Baru Bian and Masir Kujat; Upko’s Wilfred Madius Tangau and independent Maszlee Malik had rejected Muhyiddin’s leadership.
Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Pejuang, in a separate statement, also denied they were backing Muhyiddin’s administration.
In his televised address, Muhyiddin said he would not quit despite being pressured to do so, adding that he had received statutory declarations from MPs that “convinced me I still enjoy majority support at this time”.
Umno, which has 37 MPs including those who are part of the Cabinet, had yesterday announced that it was retracting its support for the PN-led government.
