GEORGE TOWN:
An additional 210,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccines are being provided for Penang on top of the 707,220 allocated for the month of August, chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said today.

However, he has asked Putrajaya to raise the allocation to 1.2 million this month, as vaccination centres in the state were able to administer 40,000 jabs a day.

“With the 917,220 doses we have now, we are able to achieve a target of having 100% of the adult population vaccinated with at least one dose by early September,” he said in a statement today.

Penang’s population is 1.77 million of whom 1.31 million have registered for the vaccination programme. State government statistics show that 859,623 people have received their first dose so far.

There have been 10,596 Covid-19 cases in the past two weeks up to today, with 5,370 active cases, Penang health department data shows.

Today, there were 908 new cases recorded, a slight dip after record highs last Thursday at 1,022 cases. Overall, there are 53,276 cases as of now.

The highly industrialised Perai-Juru area recorded the highest case numbers in the past two weeks with 817 cases, and on the island, Mukim 13 (Bandar Baru Air Itam, Paya Terubong and Relau) recorded 682 cases.

Butterworth and George Town recorded 337 and 338 cases respectively, while neighbouring sub-districts also recorded high numbers in the past two weeks.

All five districts are considered red zones with at least 41 or more active cases in 52 sub-districts in the state.
