Ismail was Muhyiddin Yassin’s deputy for about 41 days before his administration collapsed after several Umno MPs withdrew their support for the Perikatan Nasional government.
“I looked at Ismail Sabri’s reputation and found that when Covid-19 hit the country, he was the senior minister who announced all the SOPs and was quite an expert in fighting Covid-19,” Ahmad said on Bernama TV’s Ruang Bicara programme yesterday.
“He was also the leader of the opposition when Pakatan Harapan ruled for 22 months. These experiences are enough to enable him to be elected as the ninth prime minister.”
Ismail was senior minister for security and also held the defence portfolio under Muhyiddin’s administration.
Ahmad also said that if Ismail is appointed, he needs to seek advice and discuss with the Umno Supreme Council or its political bureau on policies for the people.
