Number of flood evacuees climbs in southern states

The number of flood evacuees saw a steep climb overnight in the southern states of Negeri Sembilan, Johor and Melaka as heavy rain continued to lash many parts of the country.

However, the total number of flood evacuees nationwide saw a huge drop with 6,975 victims remaining in 113 relief centres in seven states.

According to the social welfare department’s (JKM) Info Bencana website, updated at 7.48am, the number of evacuees rose to 1,767 in Negeri Sembilan from 1,363 last night.

The victims, from 460 families, are being sheltered at 16 flood relief centres in the state.

Yesterday, FMT reported that Negeri Sembilan was preparing for the worst following the weather forecast of continuous heavy rain in several parts of the state over the next few days.

In Johor, evacuees from the flood-hit districts of Segamat and Tangkak shot up to 1,605 from 1,167 last night, with the number of families involved soaring from 297 to 498.

Based on information in the website, an additional six flood relief centres were opened in the state, bringing the total to 26.

Meanwhile, the authorities have reported that the water levels of two rivers in Segamat have exceeded the danger level.

They are Sungai Segamat in Bandar Segamat with a water level of 9.82m and Sungai Tangkak in Kampung Sri Makmur at 4.29m.

In Melaka, the number of flood victims increased to 1,217 from 310 families as of this morning compared to 507 evacuees from 134 families last night. They are being sheltered in 14 relief centres at the moment.

In Sabah, the number of evacuees had dropped to 386 this morning from 566 people last night, according to the Info Bencana website.

In Pahang, there were 1,750 flood evacuees this morning. A total of 539 families are staying at 49 relief centres.

Yesterday, the state disaster management secretariat confirmed that the second wave of floods had already started with several districts, which had previously recovered from the first wave, flooded again.

Meanwhile, Terengganu saw the number of evacuees dropping to 147 from 44 families compared to 165 from 49 families yesterday. Only three relief centres remained open, with two in Dungun and one in Kemaman.

In Kelantan, the number of flood victims also recorded a decrease, with 308 people from 109 families this morning compared to 331 evacuees from 115 families yesterday.

According to the Info Bencana website, all evacuees in Selangor have returned home with all relief centres closed.
