I was in court, Najib says on Parliament no-show

PKR’s Fahmi Fadzil had pointed out that the former prime minister and other Umno leaders were absent during the Sosma vote yesterday.

Najib Razak says Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang were also absent during the vote on the Sosma motion yesterday.
PETALING JAYA:
Former prime minister Najib Razak has hit back at a PKR MP who said his absence and that of other Umno leaders led to the government failing to approve a motion on a controversial law in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

In a Facebook post, Najib explained that he had to attend court until the evening.

He was responding to Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil, who noted that several Umno leaders were absent from the Dewan Rakyat during a vote on a motion under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), including party leader Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.

Najib, the Pekan MP, pointed out that Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang were also absent during the vote.

“Are they also planning to cancel the MoU so that the 15th general election can be held as soon as possible?” he asked.

Yesterday, home minister Hamzah Zainudin proposed that the Dewan Rakyat extend the enforcement of sub-section 4(5) of Sosma, which allows a maximum 28-day detention without trial, for another five years from July 31.

The motion was, however, voted down with 84 votes in favour and 86 against. The remaining 50 MPs were absent.

Najib also questioned why PH tried to blame the government’s failure to pass the motion on Umno, when it was the opposition who failed to abolish Sosma in the first place.
