KUALA LUMPUR:
The magistrates’ court here fined a Canadian man RM800 for not wearing a face mask in a supermarket and making lewd gestures at a security guard.

Magistrate S Mageswary issued the fine after Theberge Travis Lee pleaded guilty to charges under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act and Regulation 18 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within Infected Local Areas).

For the first charge under the Minor Offences Act, Travis Lee was accused of disrespecting the supermarket’s security guard after he gave the latter the middle finger.

The incident occurred at the Village Grocer M-City, Jalan Ampang, on April 16.

Travis Lee was also charged with not wearing a face mask in the supermarket.

During mitigation, Travis Lee’s lawyer Jayananda Rao told the court that his client wished to apologise over the incident.

“It was indeed foolish and reckless behaviour. He promised not to do it again,” he added.

Jayananda also said that Travis Lee was cooperative during the investigation.

Meanwhile, deputy public prosecutor Wardah Nasuha Safian urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence against Travis Lee.

Last week, Wangsa Maju police said they arrested a 44-year-old Canadian for swearing and making lewd gestures at a shopping mall guard after he was admonished for not wearing a face mask.
