PETALING JAYA:
Selangor health authorities have booked 125 people for smoking offences in a special two-day operation which started on Wednesday.

Compound fines for a total of RM30,900 were issued for smoking in eateries and failure to display the smoking ban signs at the premises.

State health director Dr Sha’ari Ngadiman said if the offenders did not pay their compound fines within the stipulated time, court action would be taken against them.

“It is hoped that this operation will increase public awareness on smoking offences in all non-smoking areas, especially at food premises and popular public spots as well as to ensure the cleanliness of food premises,” Bernama reported him as saying.

Sha’ari said the operation targeted food premises in Kajang, Bangi and the surrounding areas. It involved 106 personnel from the department.

A total of 37 food premises were closed for 14 days and 283 notices were issued with compound fines worth RM192,900, he said.
