
Graft, he said, was not exclusive to a single individual.
“When I look at the reaction to Najib’s sentencing, I see some leaders who are just as corrupt saying ‘that’s good’. And I find it odd,” he told reporters after attending a seminar here.
While the PKR president did not identify anyone in particular, he said it was an “open secret” that some leaders had amassed billions of ringgit, which had been highlighted in the Pandora and Panama papers.
Yet, some of these leaders were now attacking Najib, he said.
Anwar said some of Najib’s critics should not act as if they were “clean” or as if they had done nothing wrong.
“So don’t act like you guys are great.”
The Pandora Papers refers to a data leak that occurred in October last year involving nearly 12 million documents and other records from offshore service providers who helped set up and manage shell companies around the world.
Among those who have been linked to it included finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, PKR’s William Leong as well as parents of fugitive financier Low Taek Jho.
The exposé by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) came five years after the ICIJ published the Panama Papers.
The Panama Papers, which cited documents allegedly belonging to Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, asserted that some national leaders and their confidants used offshore banking to conceal their fortunes.
On Tuesday, a five-member Federal Court bench chaired by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat affirmed Najib’s conviction and sentence by the Court of Appeal on Dec 8 last year, which in turn had upheld a High Court decision.
On July 28, 2020, trial judge Nazlan Ghazali sentenced the Pekan MP to 12 years’ jail and a RM210 million fine over seven corruption charges.
Najib was then sent to the Kajang Prison to serve his sentence.
