ALOR SETAR:
An immigration officer riding a big motorcycle died while a colleague on another bike suffered a broken leg when a car slammed into their machines near the Gurun toll plaza exit this morning.

Nizam Samsudin, 46, a deputy assistant director of immigration, died while senior deputy assistant director Zaili Nizam Muhammad, 43, was injured.

Both men were riding 650cc Kawasaki motorcycles, police said.

Kuala Muda police chief Zaidy Che Hassan said the two officers, based at a temporary immigration depot in Sungai Bakap, Penang, were heading north on the North-South Highway.

A police statement said a car travelling in the same direction had crashed into the two motorcycles.

It hit the rear of Nizam’s machine, causing him to skid into the emergency lane. Zaili Nizam, who was already riding in the emergency lane, did not have time to react and crashed into Nizam’s machine, police said.

Nizam died at the scene, while Zaili Nizam was taken to a hospital in Sungai Petani for treatment.

Police are tracking the car involved. The driver is believed to have fled. Those who witnessed the accident are urged to come forward to assist in the investigation.
