Padang Serai election set for Dec 7

Nominations are slated for Nov 24 while early voting will be held on Dec 3.

There will be 13 days for campaigning, while applications for postal voting can be made online from Nov 18 to Nov 22.
PETALING JAYA:
The Election Commission (EC) has set Dec 7 for polling for the Padang Serai seat in Kedah, with nominations slated for Nov 24.

EC chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh said early voting will be held on Dec 3.

There will be 13 days for campaigning, while applications for postal voting can be made online from Nov 18 to Nov 22.

This follows the death of Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for the seat, M Karupaiya, on Wednesday.

Abdul Ghani also said Dewan Kompleks Sukan Kulim Hi-Tech will be used as the nomination centre as well as vote counting centre for the election.

Candidates who were nominated previously do not have to be nominated again but will need to draw lots on Nov 24 for their new position on the ballot paper. New candidates who wish to contest the seat will need to submit their nominations on that day.

The Elections (Conduct of Elections) Regulations 1981, Regulation 11(6) states that the EC can call for a by-election on a separate date in the event a nominated candidate dies.

Yesterday, FMT reported that the returning officer (RO) for Padang Serai had returned the writ to the EC, a mandatory requirement if polling for any seat cannot be held for some reason after nominations.

Karupaiya, who was seeking re-election to a second term, was in a six-cornered fight against Barisan Nasional’s C Sivarraajh, Perikatan Nasional’s Azman Nasrudin, Pejuang’s Hamzah Abdul Rahman, Warisan’s Bakri Hashim, and independent candidate Sreanandha Rao.
