PETALING JAYA:
Putrajaya will allocate RM50 million each in aid to Kelantan and Terengganu after the east coast states were hit by floods, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

These funds will be distributed in the form of “wang ehsan” (goodwill payments), Anwar told reporters in Pasir Mas, Kelantan.

It comprises RM1,000 for each household evacuated to relief centres and RM10,000 for each family who lost a loved one due to the floods.

He said the payments will be made to the heads of the households.

So far, five people have died while more than 70,000 have been evacuated due to the floods which began over the weekend.

More than 31,000 people in Kelantan were forced to leave their homes while over 39,000 in Terengganu were evacuated.

Hundreds of people in Pahang, Johor and Perak have also been affected by floods caused by the monsoon season.

Meanwhile, the irrigation and drainage department’s national flood forecasting and warning centre has warned several locations in Johor and Pahang of floods from tomorrow.

The Selangor state government had also donated RM1 million to Kelantan and Terengganu in view of the floods.

The nation was hit by devastating floods late last year, resulting in losses amounting to between RM5.3 billion and RM6.5 billion. The floods also claimed the lives of 55 people.
