KUALA LUMPUR:
Communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil says he hopes to table the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) Bill by March as it has to go through the appropriate process.

“The process requires us to submit a memorandum to the Cabinet first, (followed by) the attorney-general’s chambers, and then to Parliament,” he told reporters after his ministry’s monthly assembly here.

“We hope to table it before the end of the year during the October session or the March session in 2024.”

Previously, Fahmi said the MMC draft bill was being discussed by media organisations, related companies, and media practitioners’ associations.

He said the bill was the government’s commitment to ensuring press freedom in the country.

The MMC’s formation was proposed in 2018 to represent the various media organisations in the country in combating fake news and ensuring the well-being of media practitioners.
