GEORGE TOWN:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has hailed Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi’s visit as “significant”, following their meeting which touched on a variety of issues.

Stating that Sino-Malaysian ties have never been better, Anwar said Wang and him have a “strong personal bond and friendship” which allowed for an easier dialogue between the two leaders.

Anwar said they discussed various aspects of cooperation and collaboration between the two nations, with a particular focus on investments, education, and regional issues.

He then thanked Wang for his role in facilitating significant Chinese investments into Malaysia, such as petrochemical giant Rongsheng and carmaker Geely, along with other key players.

Anwar said talks also delved into education, especially as Malaysia hosts 60,000 Chinese students, while a growing number of Malaysians are choosing to study in China.

Anwar added that the two of them spoke about further cooperation in research and education, and acknowledged the potential for further academic exchanges that could contribute to the growth and development of both countries.

He said the talks also touched on regional matters, such as an “Asean mechanism” in order to address pressing issues in the South China Sea.

“Our position is that ties between Malaysia and China must remain very strong, and be further enhanced from the normal diplomatic partnership through strong, strategic partnership,” Anwar said.

Earlier, Wang also met foreign minister Zambry Abdul Kadir, transport minister Loke Siew Fook and caretaker Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Anwar had previously been reported as saying that Wang was willing to meet him in Penang as the prime minister was busy campaigning for the state polls tomorrow.

Wang is on a four-day visit to three Asean countries – Singapore, Malaysia and Cambodia.

He arrived in Malaysia from Singapore, where he met Singapore prime minister Lee Hsien Loong, deputy prime minister Lawrence Wong, and foreign minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

In a statement, the Chinese foreign ministry said it hopes the visits will strengthen strategic communication with the three Southeast Asian countries.
