The PN secretary-general cited comments on social media, saying that many Malaysians have criticised the unity government under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for failing to resolve pertinent issues affecting them.
“We are not thinking about taking over the government, but in social media, people are asking when we will be taking over. That’s what we’re seeing often,” he said at a press conference.
Hamzah also claimed that the current government was in a state of disarray and experiencing internal conflicts.
“The prime minister said the Palestine Solidarity Week in schools was discussed and agreed on by the Cabinet, but we see that those who are opposing it now are the same ones within the government.
“There are PKR and DAP members who are opposing what was approved,” the Larut MP said.
Hamzah also said the apparent mistake in the revenue projections of the 2024 budget’s fiscal review reflected the government’s lack of meticulousness in planning.
The opposition previously claimed they were notified by deputy finance minister Ahmad Maslan that the projection of RM623 million in revenue from indirect taxes had been revised to RM4.7 billion.
The Bersatu secretary-general also questioned the credibility of Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul, claiming he had treated opposition MPs unfairly in the House.
Hamzah said Johari is the first Speaker with no legal background, adding that his predecessor Azhar Harun did a better job in the post since he “was not a politician”.
“We are not calling for the Speaker to be removed, we just want him to be fair and to follow the set procedure.”
When asked whether he found Johari incompetent, Hamzah said: “I can’t say yes or no to that, but I just think he is not fair.”
PN chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan claimed that Johari had barred opposition MPs from asking ministers three additional questions during the question-and-answer session, though this is provided for in the Standing Orders.
“They only allow two additional questions,” he said. “So we would like to request that, in Parliament, the opposition be given rightful treatment based on the constitution,” he said.
