Terengganu floods force closure of 34 schools

State education department says some are flooded, while others are being used as shelters for evacuees.

KUALA TERENGGANU:
The floods in three Terengganu districts have resulted in the closure of 34 schools, nine due to flooding and 25 that have been turned into relief centres, Terengganu education department deputy director (school management sector) Azman Othman Abdullah said.

He said in the Kuala Terengganu district, SK Seri Budiman, SK Kampung Bukit Chendering, SK Tok Dir, and SMKA Sheikh Malek were flooded.

In the Kuala Nerus district, affected schools include SK Padang Kemunting; SMK Padang Kemunting; SMK Kompleks Mengabang Telipot and Sekolah Sukan Malaysia, while SK Kampung Besut in Setiu is also flooded.

Azman said the schools doubling as relief centres included SK Chendering, SK Atas Tol, SK Pasir Panjang, SK Gong Tok Nasek and SK Rengas Bekah in Kuala Terengganu; SK Tok Kah in Dungun and SK Kg Nail and SK Kg Baharu in the Besut district.

Almost 4,800 people have been evacuated.
