Johari suspended Awang after the latter refused to retract a remark he made.
Shortly after the suspension, opposition MPs staged a 10-minute walkout from the House.
On their return, Awang was told by deputy speaker Alice Lau to leave as he had been ejected.
Awang refused, saying he was unaware of the suspension.
“I was walking out and didn’t even hear it. I want to know what I did wrong.
“Has he (Johari) even checked the Hansard? When I left the chamber, the Speaker seemed emotional,” he said.
Awang insisted on remaining in the House, saying the Speaker must return to explain the suspension.
Lau then warned Awang that she would enhance his suspension to 10 days if he refuses to leave.
The opposition MPs had staged their walkout over a “last-minute” slot given to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to thank the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and his predecessor for their service.
Kota Bharu MP Takiyuddin Hassan said Anwar’s speech, which lasted five minutes, was designated as a “ministerial briefing session”.
He argued that the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders stipulates that these sessions must be included in the daily agenda for sittings.
