NIBONG TEBAL:
Malay voters, who form nearly 60% of the electorate in Sungai Bakap, played a vital role in ensuring that Perikatan Nasional retained the state seat yesterday with a bigger majority.

Some 24,711 voters cast their ballots which made up 63.45% of the total of 39,279 registered voters in the constituency.

According to PN’s internal data, about 70% of the 22,815 Malay voters came out to cast their ballots, with a majority supporting the opposition.

About 12,776 Malay votes swung in PN’s favour.

While the Chinese and Indian voters continued to back Pakatan Harapan, they did not come out in droves.

Fewer than half of the 8,642 Chinese voters went to the polls, while some 58% of the total 6,683 Indian electorate voted this time around, which resulted in 6,176 non-Malay votes swinging in PH’s favour.

Interestingly, 1,763 non-Malay voters decided to back PN, the data showed.

PN won seven out of eight polling districts, doing well in key areas such as Sungai Duri with a 2,056-vote majority, Padang Lalang (841) and Kampung Besar (659).

PH managed to maintain a lead only in Puteri Gunong, where it secured a majority of 369 votes. The district is considered a PH stronghold.

It was however a close fight in the Sungai Bakap polling district with PN narrowly edging PH with a 145-vote majority in the PH stronghold.

PH had, before polling day, predicted “moderate” support in Tasek Junjong, while the coalition considered Sungai Duri, Kampung Besar, and Sungai Kechil “challenging”.

Support in the polling districts of Ladang Sempah and Padang Lalang was considered mixed.
