New zero-emission vehicles to start using JPJePlate, says Loke

Transport minister Loke Siew Fook says existing ZEVs may also opt to use the series from November.

Transport minister Loke Siew Fook says special ‘EV’ index number plates are open for bidding from Sept 9 to 13.
CYBERJAYA:
All new zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs), including electric vehicles, will soon be required to use the road transport department’s (RTD) JPJePlate, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook.

Loke said the JPJePlate is not mandatory for existing ZEVs on the road, but their owners can place orders for the number plate starting in November if they are interested in switching.

He also said vehicle manufacturers and distributors may order JPJePlates on behalf of customers who have purchased new ZEV vehicles through jpjeplate.jpj.gov.my starting today.

“The launch of JPJePlate today does not involve non-ZEV vehicles. The focus now is to ensure the smooth implementation of JPJePlate for new ZEVs,” he said when launching the JPJePlate today.

“The transport ministry welcomes public feedback on this initiative.”

The JPJePlate, priced at RM98 per set, includes a front plate, a rear plate, an RFID windshield sticker, and standard delivery.

Loke said the JPJePlate design features enhanced retro-reflective visibility, anti-cloning holograms, and smart technology integration through RFID, intended to improve road safety and streamline enforcement.

“The implementation of the JPJePlate special design for new ZEVs today is the government’s dual-strategy initiative to provide additional incentives to encourage the use of ZEVs, and to continue the digitisation efforts,” he said.

Loke also said a special bidding process for number plates with an “EV” index mark begins today until Sept 13 through the JPJeBid system.

“The bidding results will be announced within 24 hours after the bidding process ends,” he said, adding that a portion of the revenue will be allocated to public initiatives.
