Azmin, who is also PN’s director for the Mahkota by-election, told a ceramah here that Umno would be “more arrogant” if BN’s candidate, Kluang Umno Youth chief Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah, wins the by-election on Sept 28.
“It’s strange in Johor. Is there a unity government? Are they really united? They say they have a unity government at the federal level, but why isn’t there one in Johor,” said the Selangor PN chief at a ceramah tonight.
“That’s why I want to ask the menteri besar… If they are able to retain the Mahkota seat, will he form a unity government like the one at the federal level? Is he brave enough to do this? I’m asking politely.”
The Johor state government was formed by BN, which has 39 seats in the state assembly, with the support of Pakatan Harapan (12 seats). However, the two coalitions have not formed an alliance, unlike in the federal government.
Touching on the frustration faced by certain quarters in Amanah due to a lack of roles, such as village heads, in Johor, Azmin said his “friends” in PKR and Amanah should be aware that they were supporting a party which didn’t care about them.
Kluang Amanah had previously lobbied to contest Mahkota, with Amanah Youth executive council member Fadhli Umar Aminolhuda also stating he was determined to push for the party to field a candidate since the Johor government was not a unity government.
Amanah’s insistence drew brickbats from several Umno leaders, with Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi warning other parties in the unity government coalition not to demand to contest the seat.
“If you give Umno another seat, they will be even more arrogant,” said Azmin.
“If those (parties) who support them don’t even get any benefit, how can we expect the people (who vote for them) to benefit?”
PN will be represented by Haizan Jaafar in the Sept 28 Mahkota by-election. Early voting is set for Sept 24.
