PETALING JAYA:
Majlis Amanah Rakyat chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has warned that any attempt to cover up bullying cases in Mara-related institutions will be met with firm action.

“If I receive information that there has been any efforts to conceal details or cover up bullying cases for any reason, deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has directed me to take firm action.

“This includes replacing the headmaster or director of any Junior Science College (MRSM) or Mara Institute of Education (IPMa) involved,” he said in an X posting today.

Zahid also holds the rural and regional development ministry post, under which Mara is listed.

Asyraf’s comments come in the wake of two bullying cases at the National Defence University (UPNM) being revealed in recent weeks.

Earlier today, police reported that they had recorded statements from nine people in connection with the alleged assault of a cadet at UPNM. The victim, who suffered cracks to his ribs and spine, was reportedly stomped on by a senior cadet.

The main suspect is expected to appear at Cheras police headquarters this afternoon to provide his statement.

The incident was said to have taken place at 10.45pm on Oct 21, while the 19-year-old cadet was near a field after a roll call.

Police only received the report on Nov 8 and the victim is currently receiving treatment in the hospital.

This incident marks the second reported assault case involving UPNM cadets in October.

Last Friday, Amirul Iskandar Norhanizan, 22, claimed trial to assaulting Salman Saiful Surash, 20, by placing a hot iron on his chest at the UPNM hostel on Oct 22. The victim suffered second-degree burns on his chest.

Amirul faces a maximum jail term of 10 years or a fine, and could also be whipped, if convicted.
