Anwar said today’s additional allocation, which will be channelled through the implementation coordination unit of the Prime Minister’s Department, will be used for repairing essential infrastructure such as roads and the drainage system. This will include raising road levels in Hulu Besut.
The federal government had previously allocated RM50 million to assist flood victims in Kelantan and Terengganu through the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma).
“We are monitoring the situation in other states. I expect the total losses (in the affected states) caused by the floods to reach almost RM1 billion,” he said in a Bernama report.
Anwar also said the government has agreed to provide RM500 in aid to each of 14,000 civil servants in Terengganu.
No need to declare emergency
Anwar added that there is no need to declare a state of emergency despite the widespread floods as security forces and the fire and rescue department — along with federal, state and district agencies — are capable of handling the disaster effectively.
“So, there is absolutely no need to declare an emergency,” he said.
Kelantan and Terengganu have been hit the hardest by this year’s floods that have affected nine states, with 96,929 people evacuated to relief centres in Kelantan and 43,581 in Terengganu as of 6am today
Anwar arrived in Kuala Terengganu this morning to assess the worsening floods in the state.
He visited the relief centre at SK Telaga Papan in Setiu, before continuing to another nearby relief centre at SK Mangkok.
Besut remains the worst-hit district in Terengganu with 16,084 victims, followed by Hulu Terengganu (7,080), Dungun (6,470), Setiu (6,332), Kuala Terengganu (2,940), Kuala Nerus (2,307), Kemaman (1,230) and Marang (775).
