PUTRAJAYA:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has described Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a true friend who stood by him during his most difficult times.

Speaking at an event at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre during Erdogan’s two-day visit to Malaysia, Anwar said his relationship with the Turkish leader was built on mutual trust forged through adversity.

Anwar recalled how Erdogan and his family personally reached out to him and his wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, during his toughest moments.

“In times of personal adversity, he extended a hand when many turned away,” he said.

“His support was neither perfunctory nor designed for political expediency. It was an expression of genuine fraternity.

“Your support, my friend, my brother, was not for political reasons. It was an expression of genuine friendship, love and compassion.

“I have never forgotten your kindness. Malaysians never will.”

Erdogan is on a two-day official visit to Malaysia, with both leaders expected to discuss strengthening bilateral ties in defense, trade and cultural cooperation.

Anwar has a long-standing personal relationship with Erdogan dating from his days in the opposition and the Reformasi era.

In 2008, Anwar sought refuge in the Turkish embassy in Kuala Lumpur when criminal allegations of sodomy were levelled against him.

Anwar also called Erdogan a leader of vision, crediting him for steering Turkey through a period of transformation over the past two decades.

“Few statesmen of our era have exhibited such fortitude, resolve and a firm grasp of history’s tides as Erdogan.

“He has reshaped the contours of Turkish statecraft, reasserted national pride and positioned Turkey as an indispensable player on the global stage,” he said.

He also commended Erdogan’s stance on Palestine, calling him a leader with moral clarity and courage.

“At a time when principles are too often sacrificed for convenience, he has spoken out fearlessly against dispossession, occupation and genocide.

“Turkey’s support has gone beyond words. It has been tangible, diplomatic and steadfast,” he said.
