Floods cause more to flee in Johor and Sarawak

A total of 11,776 people are in relief centres across Johor, but conditions in Sabah have improved.

PETALING JAYA:
The number of flood evacuees moved to relief centres has risen in Johor and Sarawak, while conditions in Sabah have improved.

Bernama reported that the number of evacuees in Johor rose to 11,776 people at 4pm, up from 10,763 this morning.

State disaster management committee chairman Azmi Rohani said Johor Bahru recorded the highest number at 4,384, followed by Kluang (2,669), Pontian (1,791), Kota Tinggi (1,671) and Kulai (1,261).

Five rivers have exceeded the danger level in Batu Pahat, Kluang, Kulai, Pontian and Mersing, while two roads in Kota Tinggi and Segamat have been closed to all vehicles due to flooding.

In Sarawak, the number of flood evacuees has risen to 435, up from 274 this morning, and are housed in five centres in Kapit, Kanowit and Sibu Jaya.

In Sabah, the numbers have dropped to 344 people this evening, compared with 1,248 this morning. Three relief centres in Kota Marudu were closed.

The Sarawak rural water supply department said four water treatment plants in Kapit and Sibu were suspended due to the critical flood situation and river water levels.
