Terengganu Umno Youth chief, Tengku Haphiz Putera, said it was an unintentional mistake by the graphic designer.
“I will not defend him even though he did it for us for free. We will leave it to the authorities to investigate the matter.
“Terengganu Umno Youth will not compromise on this mistake,” he said in a video posted on Facebook.
Previously, Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh had spoken up against the owner of a hardware store in Penang for hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down.
He had called for a police report to be lodged and stern action taken.
Akmal also addressed the incident involving Terengganu Umno Youth, confirming the mistake and urging police to act, even though the person is from his own party.
The graphic in question had condemned the flag mistake in Penang, and also called for justice in the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir, the 13-year-old student who recently died after allegedly being the victim of bullying.
The graphic displayed the Jalur Gemilang and a black-and-white photograph of Zara. However, the Jalur Gemilang only had 12 stripes, and not 14.
Social media users spotted the mistake, after which the graphic was deleted and replaced with a new one with the right number of stripes.
Separately, DAP today installed a giant Jalur Gemilang at the hardware store on Jalan Bertam Perdana in Penang, Bernama reported.
Penang DAP assistant secretary H’ng Mooi Lye said the 10x20ft flag was put up as an educational effort to demonstrate the correct way to display the national flag and to prevent similar mistakes from recurring.
H’ng, who is also the state local government and urban and rural planning committee chairman, also distributed 500 flags to members of the public at the site as part of the outreach initiative.
The hardware store owner, Pang Chin Tian, 59, also said he was ready to face any legal consequences.
He said the mistake was unintentional and took full responsibility for the incident last Saturday, vowing to be more careful in the future when displaying the national flag.
Police arrested Pang last Saturday and released him on bail after recording his statement on Sunday.
