PETALING JAYA:
Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah student S Vikneswaran pleaded not guilty today to defiling a copy of the Quran by stepping on it.

S Vikneswaran made his plea after he was charged before Kuantan sessions court judge Harmi Thamri Mohamad, Harian Metro reported.

The charge was framed under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a sacred object with the intention of insulting Islam, which is punishable by up to two years in prison, a fine or both, upon conviction.

Vikneswaran also claimed trial to the improper use of network facilities by uploading a picture of himself stepping on the Quran on social media.

The charge was framed under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, up to two years in jail or both, upon conviction.

Vikneswaran was charged with committing both offences at a house in Taman Seri Mahkota Aman at around 1.30pm on Feb 22.

Pahang prosecution director Sharizat Ismail led the prosecution while Vikneswaran was represented by lawyer Rusnizam Abdullah.

The prosecution asked the court to set bail at RM50,000 for both charges, although Rusnizam appealed for the amount to be lowered to RM10,000.

The court fixed bail at RM10,000 and ordered the student to report to the nearest police station every month until the case is over. April 8 has been fixed for mention.
