Body cams reduce police misconduct, says Bukit Aman

Bukit Aman crime prevention and community safety department director Yusri Hassan Basri says the body cameras encourage personnel to follow procedures and directives.

Last year, over 7,000 units of body cameras were deployed across 157 police district headquarters and 640 police stations.
PETALING JAYA:
The body cameras worn by police have significantly reduced misconduct among members of the force, Bukit Aman’s crime prevention and community safety department director Yusri Hassan Basri says.

Yusri said there was less corruption and abuse of power among police personnel than there had been when such body cameras were not in use.

“It is effective as every interaction of our frontliners is recorded,” he was quoted as saying in an interview with Berita Harian.

“It encourages personnel to follow established procedures and directives. It also minimises the risk of misconduct.”

Yusri said footage from body cameras was also used as evidence in court cases, including those where officers are accused of misconduct.

Last year, over 7,000 units of body cameras were deployed across 157 police district headquarters and 640 police stations.

Two years ago, the customs department said the use of body-worn cameras by its officers had resulted in a 38.5% reduction in misconduct, corruption, and abuse of power cases between Aug 1, 2023 and July 31, 2024.

Yusri said he had received positive feedback from personnel and the public about the use of body cameras.

“It increases transparency, clears up misunderstandings, improves personnel discipline, and protects both sides,” he added.
