PETALING JAYA:
PAS vice-president Amar Abdullah has brushed off calls for Perikatan Nasional to name a new opposition leader sooner rather than later.

The four-term Panchor assemblyman said the position was important, but there was no urgent need to name a new opposition leader to replace Larut MP Hamzah Zainudin following his sacking from Bersatu in February.

“We have the candidates but haven’t announced them because Parliament just finished sitting (last month), and there’s still quite some time before the next sitting (in late June).

“So it’s not an urgent matter yet,” he said, according to Utusan Malaysia.

Amar added that the candidate has yet to be finalised with PAS still mulling over several leaders.

On Sunday, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said PN was taking too long to name Hamzah’s successor, insisting the matter needed to be resolved swiftly.

The former PN chairman said it was not a tough matter to settle, adding that he had written to the coalition’s Supreme Council urging for the matter to be expedited but no action was forthcoming.
