PETALING JAYA:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has ordered the education ministry and the Implementation Coordinating Unit to intervene after reports that pupils of SK Balaban Jaya in Beluran, Sabah, are being forced to study in makeshift classrooms.

In a Facebook post, Anwar said the comfort and wellbeing of children in schools must be given attention with immediate action taken to resolve the matter.

In response, the education ministry said the school had to resort to makeshift classrooms after part of its infrastructure was damaged by soil movement, leaving it unsafe.

For the short term, those studying at SK Balaban Jaya will be temporarily relocated to SK Pekan Beluran, with transport provided for the pupils.

“This is to ensure the pupils are not affected and their parents are not burdened,” it said in a statement.

The ministry also said upgrading works will be immediately conducted at nearby SK Sungai Nangka. After the work is completed, it will temporarily host the affected children while a new building for SK Balaban Jaya is constructed.

Warisan’s Likas assemblyman Tham Yun Fook flagged the issue yesterday, saying the pupils were forced to study under tents and along mosque corridors.

Tham said he had received multiple complaints from parents about the issue.
