PETALING JAYA:
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has cautioned against rushing the appointment of a new opposition leader, saying the process requires in-depth discussions among all parties in Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Hadi said the decision must take into account the views of all MPs in the opposition bloc, Sinar Harian reported.

“Malaysia is a democratic country and so we must respect differing views. PAS does not make hasty decisions. We take into account the views of all parties in the opposition.

“That is why we are taking some time to gather input from all those involved,” he told reporters at the Terengganu PAS Hari Raya celebration at Dataran Shahbandar, Kuala Terengganu, today.

When asked about the timeframe for the appointment, Hadi said there was still sufficient time, as Parliament would only convene in June.

“Better safe than sorry,” the Marang MP added.

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday said PN’s delay in naming a new opposition leader following Hamzah Zainudin’s resignation made the coalition look bad on the national stage.

The former PN chairman said the vacancy announced over the weekend should have been filled immediately, especially since the coalition’s Supreme Council had already agreed that PAS should take over the post.

On Sunday, PN chairman Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar confirmed Hamzah’s resignation as opposition leader, which came about two months after his sacking from Bersatu.

When asked about speculation that Hamzah might join PAS, Hadi said the decision was up to the Larut MP.

“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there,” Hadi said.

On his recent meeting with Muhyiddin in Rusila, Hadi said it was aimed at strengthening ties among PN component parties.

“Alhamdulillah, so far there are no problems. Although there may be differences in opinion, we remain united in terms of principles and goals,” he said.
