PETALING JAYA:
Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 has become the first hospital in Southeast Asia to introduce supine high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), a non-invasive treatment for uterine fibroids.

Supine HIFU is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused ultrasound energy to target fibroid tissue without the need for incisions or removal of the uterus.

Conventional HIFU procedures are typically carried out with patients in a face-down position for extended periods.

Chin Keat Chyuan, the managing director of KPJ Healthcare, said the introduction of Supine HIFU underscores how Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 is strengthening women’s health services through targeted innovation that improves how care is delivered.

Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 is one of the hospitals under KPJ Healthcare’s networks.

“It is a milestone for KPJ Health System, it reinforces our commitment to advancing care delivery through less invasive treatment options that preserve clinical outcomes and enhance patient experience.

“This development demonstrates how we are applying technology in a practical and responsible manner,” Chin said in a statement.

In 2024, it was reported that about 20% of women in Malaysia suffer from uterine fibroids.

Traditional treatment approaches may involve surgery, including myomectomy or hysterectomy, which can require longer recovery periods, while HIFU provides a non-surgical option for selected cases while preserving the uterus.

Dr Haliza Kamarudin, a gynaecologist who performed the procedure alongside Dr Liew Yen Eit, an obstetrician, said supine HIFU provided an additional option for women who were exploring alternatives to surgery, particularly those who wish to preserve their uterus.

“Careful assessment remains important to determine suitability for this treatment,” Haliza said.
