PETALING JAYA:
Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 (DSH2) has become the first hospital in Southeast Asia to introduce Supine High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) technology for the treatment of uterine fibroids, marking a significant step forward in non-invasive women’s healthcare services in the region.

DSH2, which is part of KPJ Healthcare Bhd’s network of hospitals, said the initiative was undertaken through a strategic collaboration with Delta Medisains (M) Sdn Bhd to advance Southeast Asia’s first Supine HIFU programme for non-invasive fibroid treatment.

In a statement, KPJ Healthcare said the collaboration supports DSH2’s ongoing efforts to strengthen specialised women’s healthcare services through targeted innovation, clinical capability development and multidisciplinary care.

The supine approach enables treatment to be performed in a more natural face-up position while maintaining the precision needed for effective fibroid treatment.

DSH2 said early clinical experience involving selected HIFU cases had shown encouraging outcomes, including shorter hospital stays and faster recovery compared with conventional surgical procedures.

The collaboration between DSH2 and Delta Medisains also marks the start of a strategic five-year initiative aimed at supporting the long-term development and adoption of Supine HIFU technology in Malaysia.

The programme will also focus on medical education, technical expertise development and clinical support to help advance minimally invasive women’s healthcare services across the region.

Tuesday’s launch was attended by healthcare partners, insurance representatives, health tourism agencies and invited guests from Malaysia and across the region, reflecting growing regional interest in Malaysia’s healthcare ecosystem and DSH2’s role in women’s healthcare services.

Speaking at the launch, KPJ Healthcare president and managing director Chin Keat Chyuan said healthcare advancements must go beyond simply introducing new technologies.

In his speech, Chin stressed that patients increasingly seek treatment approaches that support faster recovery, minimise disruption to daily life and better address their individual needs.

“The Supine HIFU programme at DSH2 reflects how targeted innovation can strengthen women’s healthcare services while improving both clinical outcomes and the overall patient experience,” he said.

“More importantly, innovation must always serve a practical clinical purpose. It should translate into meaningful improvements in healthcare delivery, patient outcomes and the overall quality of care.”

The programme is led by consultant obstetricians and gynaecologists Dr Liew Yen Eit and Dr Haliza Kamarudin, with support from multidisciplinary women’s healthcare teams at DSH2.

DSH2 was recently recognised as Specialty Hospital of the Year (Women’s) – Malaysia at the Healthcare Asia Awards 2026.
