Girl who tried to fetch a ball in drain found drowned 10km away

Kajang police say the girl's body was found two days after she was reported missing while trying to retrieve a ball from a drain at a condominium complex.

The body of a nine-year-old girl who had been swept away by powerful drainage currents in Bandar Mahkota Cheras on Friday was found near Sungai Langat, police said.

Kajang police chief Naazron Abdul Yusof said the child’s body was found at 12.17pm today on the riverbank at Batu 12, near Jalan Reko, about 10.6km from where she was reported missing.

Naazron said police were alerted at 7.05pm on Friday that the victim had been swept away while trying to retrieve a ball from a drain at Seri Hijau condominium complex in Bandar Mahkota Cheras.

“The cause of death was determined to be drowning,” he said in a statement. The case has been classified as a sudden death, and the body released to the family for burial.
