MACC recommends charges against 2 in Arm Holdings case

Chief commissioner Azam Baki, however, declines to name the people in question.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the investigation into alleged corruption in the RM1.1 billion government deal with Arm Holdings is almost complete, with statements from 22 witnesses recorded so far.
PUTRAJAYA:
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has recommended that two people be charged in connection with its investigation into allegations of corruption in a RM1.1 billion investment deal involving UK-based chip maker Arm Holdings.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the investigation is nearing completion, with statements taken from 22 witnesses including former economy minister Rafizi Ramli and his ex-aide James Chai.

“I can’t say who, but we are suggesting (that charges be brought),” he told reporters after displaying four repatriated 1MDB-linked artworks here today.

He also said that two more witnesses were expected to be called, one in Taiwan and another in Malaysia.

Azam said MACC investigators had completed their assessment of possible criminal elements in the case, but a final decision on prosecution would rest with the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

In March last year, the government committed US$225 million (RM930.52 million) to a four-year partnership with Arm Holdings to lower barriers for Malaysian companies seeking access to its intellectual property and technology.

MACC launched investigations in March this year.

The anti-graft agency interviewed Chai for three days last week. Rafizi is being interviewed this week.
