SIK:
A lorry driver pleaded not guilty at the magistrates’ court here today to a charge of driving under the influence of drugs, resulting in the death of a baby boy last week.

Amiruddin Radzi, 43, made the plea after the charge was read before sessions court judge Rohaida Ishak.

Amiruddin is accused of driving a lorry under the influence of drugs, causing a road accident that led to the death of a five-month-old baby boy who was a passenger in a car.

The offence was allegedly committed near the Kampung Sadek junction along Jalan Baru Kulim-Baling-Gerik in Baling at about 10.30pm on May 7.

Amiruddin was charged under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail term of up to 15 years and a fine of up to RM100,000 upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nadia Jamal appeared for the prosecution while Amiruddin was represented by lawyer Intan Nursyafina Baharudin from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

The court allowed Amiruddin bail of RM8,000 with two sureties, with the additional condition that one of the sureties must not be a family member, and set July 1 for mention of the case.
