KUALA LUMPUR:
Police are investigating allegations that a drug trafficking network in Langkawi is being led by a police officer, says Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail.

“The matter is still under investigation. We need to confirm who is involved, whether individuals or groups. So we cannot comment for now.

“Of course, we will not compromise (if any police personnel is involved in criminal activities). This year alone, we have carried out many major seizures to ensure that national security remains protected,” he told reporters after the launch of a special police dialogue here.

Asked whether internal action would also be taken under the integrity and standards compliance department, he said investigations would be carried out in accordance with legal provisions.

“If it involves security laws and others, we will not hesitate to take legal action,” he added.

A new structured drug trafficking network reportedly emerged in Langkawi following the death of a so-called local drug lord, “Mat Nahar,” about six years ago.

The network is allegedly led by a police officer identified as “Mr A”, with several individuals formerly linked to Mat Nahar’s syndicate said to have joined the new operation.
