PETALING JAYA:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has not given any indication that the 16th general election (GE16) will be held this year, says government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil.

The communications minister stressed that the government’s main focus is on addressing various issues affecting the rakyat, including assisting small traders and groups needing support.

“The prime minister has not given any signal that GE16 will take place this year, but he has stressed that efforts to resolve the problems faced by ordinary Malaysians must continue,” Fahmi said after an event in his Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency.

GE16 is due by February 2028, but speculation persists that Anwar could call an early election, possibly in the second half of 2026, potentially aligning it with the Melaka and Johor state polls.

Melaka’s state assembly term ends in December this year, while Johor has till April 2027.

Meanwhile, Fahmi said more than 3,000 delegates from across the country would be attending the Pakatan Harapan convention in Johor on May 17.

The PH communications director said the convention would serve as an important platform for PH leaders to outline the coalition’s direction and election strategies.

Fahmi said the gathering is also expected to strengthen coordination among PH component parties in navigating the country’s increasingly challenging political landscape.
