SUNGAI PETANI:
About 50,000 pupils of private tahfiz and pondok schools will benefit from the government’s decision on university entrance for those graduating from outside the national education system, says deputy higher education minister Adam Adli.

The decision marked the most significant expansion for students from the religious stream, he said, although some tahfiz students who sat for the SPM or STPM examinations had already gone into further studies.

“There are about 50,000 private pondok graduates, while those from Chinese independent high schools, who take the Unified Examination Certificate number fewer than 9,000,” he said.

Adam said the ministry hoped the Cabinet decision would not be politicised.

“Give this situation some time to cool down and ensure that when we comment on this matter, we take into account the views of various parties and do not dismiss concerns or deny objections, while opening up broader discussions.

“We hope this situation can be managed well so that it can lead to positive impacts as hoped for,” he said.
