PAS syura council to decide on Bersatu ties, says veep

Amar Abdullah says the council will first review a report from the PN leadership, although it is unclear what the report would cover.

PAS vice-president Amar Abdullah said the syura council is still waiting for a ‘report’ to be submitted by the Perikatan Nasional leadership.
PETALING JAYA:
PAS’s syura council will determine whether the Islamic party will cut ties with Bersatu, says vice-president Amar Abdullah.

Amar said the council is still waiting for a “report” to be submitted by the Perikatan Nasional leadership, which is helmed by PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Sinar Harian reported.

“Once the report is completed, it will be presented to the syura council. A decision will then be made after the council reviews the report,” he said.

The Panchor assemblyman, who is also a member of the syura council, did not disclose what the report would cover.

The syura council is led by PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin and also comprises PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and other ulama leaders in the party.

Last week, Hadi announced that PAS was reassessing its ties with Bersatu amid the possibility of contesting the next general election without Muhyiddin Yassin’s party.

He cited several issues that had strained ties between the two parties, including the move to unseat the Perlis chief minister, alleged interference in appointments involving Kedah and Kelantan, and Bersatu’s opposition to admitting new Malay-Muslim parties into PN.

Hadi also criticised Bersatu for demanding a disproportionate share of seats despite its weak grassroots machinery, pointing out that much of the groundwork in previous elections had been carried out by PAS volunteers.

In response, Bersatu expressed regret over Hadi’s remarks, saying all major PN decisions should be decided via consensus by the coalition’s Supreme Council.

The PAS central leadership and political bureau reportedly met last Sunday in Kuala Terengganu to discuss its relationship with Bersatu.
