PETALING JAYA:
M Thinaah and Pearly Tan were the brightest sparks for Malaysia on a day that saw two seeded pairs knocked out of the All England Open in Birmingham yesterday.

The newly-crowned Swiss Open champions beat home shuttlers Jessica Hopton-Jenny Moore to become the first Malaysian women’s pair in eight years to make the quarterfinals of the prestigious tournament.

Vivien Hoo-Woon Khe Wei last achieved the feat in 2013.

The 21-18, 21-7 win was completed in 32 minutes and Thinaah-Pearly, who shocked fourth seeds Jongkolphan Kititharakul-Rawinda Prajongjai from Thailand in the opening round, will face Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida today for a place in the semis.

While the world No 22 ended a long wait for the nation, two seeded pairs crashed out unexpectedly to unheralded opponents.

Mixed doubles fifth seeds Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Li were the first to fall, losing in straight games (21-19, 21-16) to Irish siblings Sam and Chloe Magee.

Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong, seeded seventh in the men’s doubles, followed suit with a 21-19, 21-18 loss to Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen-Niclas Nohr.

Malaysia’s other representatives in the last eight are Lee Zii Jia (men’s singles), Rio 2016 silver medallists Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying and Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing (both mixed doubles).
