KUALA LUMPUR:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today announced a RM2 million allocation for sepak takraw development, bringing total funding for the sport to RM3 million.

The first RM1 million was pledged by youth and sports minister Dr Taufiq Johari from his ministry earlier today.

Speaking at the opening of the Sepak Takraw Malaysia academy building, Anwar said part of the allocation would go towards ensuring the welfare of young trainees.

“The allocation will partly be for the children undergoing training. (It is to cover) their meals and attire,” he said.

Anwar said the funds would also be channelled to sepak takraw associations as well as for the development of the academy.

Separately, Taufiq said the RM1 million set aside by his ministry would be used to help organise the Istaf Sepak Takraw World Cup, which will be held next month at Titiwangsa Stadium.

Taufiq said the funds would also be used to train the national team.
