With dining-in prohibited under the MCO, many restaurants have been shuttered, keeping their kitchens open only to fulfil delivery orders.
Now however, many among them are also cooking meals to be distributed free of charge to the nation’s many frontliners as well as the needy who have been badly hit economically by the pandemic.
Here are six such restaurants that FMT made contact with:
1. For Goodness Cakes

Owner of For Goodness Cakes, Sheila Philip began this initiative on March 22, soon after the MCO was enforced, when two foreigners asked her if she had food to spare as they had not eaten in three days.
“I posted this encounter on Facebook and people came forth asking how they could help.
“One of my customers works closely with Fahmi Fadzil and she asked if people were willing to donate, would we in turn cook the food and donate it? We said yes. There was an amazing response with people donating from RM5 up to RM1,000.”
According to Sheila, For Goodness Cakes donates 100 to 200 packs of food daily to both the needy and frontliners.
2. The Fire Grill

“Within ten days, The Fire Grill raised RM30,003. This means we can provide over 4,300 meals to the underprivileged and frontliners,” says owner of The Fire Grill, Shankar Santhiram.

You can even order a meal from The Fire Grill and at the same time help them continue their efforts. All donations can be made to: The Fire Grill: PHG One Venture Sdn Bhd: CIMB 8007747132
3. Masala Wheels

Kuhan Pathy, co-founder of Masala Wheels initiated the #FoodWithoutBorders campaign to sponsor meals for stranded university students for one week during the MCO through a “Pay It Forward” social campaign.
“We soon realised that there were many who have suddenly lost their source of income, with no savings or means to sustain their lives, and worse still, struggling to put food on the table for themselves and loved ones.
“We also wanted to find a way to help the frontliners who were serving the nation.”

Within 72 hours, Masala Wheels was able to cook, pack and deliver 7,000 meals through their initiative. Those keen on contributing towards these meals may click here.
4. Kampong Kravers

Ayub Ali, founder of Kampong Kravers related how his team was helping in the effort to ferry healthy and nutritious meals to those who need it most.
“My team and I were actually wondering how we could help ease the burden of Covid-19. One of our active volunteers, Venothan got in touch with me.
“They were looking for a caterer who would be able to cook food and do deliveries. He identified the beneficiaries and we were more than happy to cook and donate the meals to frontliners and the needy,” said Ayub Ali, founder of Kampong Kravers.
5. So Good

So Good began their Share The Meal campaign after the first week of the MCO when they received an SOS call to help provide food for a refugee community left with no food supplies.
“We are working with many NGOs who have requested our help to feed members of their communities. We highly appreciate monetary donations as well as sponsorships for basic essential items such as rice, cooking oil, canned food, eggs, instant noodles and biscuits,” said founder, Law Gin Kye.

Those interested to donate can make an online transfer to: RHB bank 2142 3100 0557 60.
6. The Billboard KL

Co-founder of The Billboard KL, Afiz Ayub told FMT that his team produces a whopping 1,500 burgers for frontliners on a weekly basis.
But on a daily basis, his team donates essential food stuff such as rice, eggs and cooking oil to 100 families.
It’s truly touching and inspiring to see Malaysians rallying together. #KitaJagaKita all the way.
